How Does Botox Work?

Like many people, you may be looking for ways to maintain beautiful skin as you age.

Along with natural cellular changes that occur over time, there are many factors that cause wrinkles to appear. These include lower collagen levels, free radicals from the surrounding environment and facial movements like squinting and frowning. And while there is no way to permanently stop the aging process, we do have methods for reducing its effects on skin health.

Botox® Cosmetic, also known simply as Botox®, is an FDA-approved, non-invasive treatment that improves the appearance of aging skin. Nearly 7.7 million Americans received Botox® injections in 2019 alone.

If you’ve never had Botox® before, you may be wondering if it is the right option for you. Let’s go over some common questions people have about this popular treatment that helps you look like you — only with fewer lines and wrinkles.

What Is Botox®? Is It Safe?

Botox® is backed by nearly two decades of published research proving its safety and effectiveness. It is a protein made from botulinum toxin, which is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.

Although it is a toxin, Botox® has many helpful cosmetic and medical uses when administered correctly and in the proper dosage. For aging skin, it prevents nerve signals from telling your facial muscles to contract. This helps the muscles to relax, which helps to reduce folds and wrinkles.

How Can Botox® Help My Skin?

Botox® works beneath the surface of your skin to visibly improve the appearance of wrinkles. It is very effective for treating a number of common signs of aging.

  • Forehead worry lines: Smooths out the deep, horizontal lines that appear on your forehead
  • Frown lines: Reduces the appearance of vertical lines between your eyebrows in the so-called “elevens” or “glabella region”
  • Crow’s feet: Gives you a more refreshed look by softening crow’s feet around the corners of your eyes
  • Upper lips: Lowers your lip line and creates a fuller-looking lip for a less “gummy” smile

What Can I Expect During My Appointment?

At Cayce Medical Spa, we always perform a facial assessment to determine the best course of treatment for your desired outcome.

Total treatment time is usually around 15 minutes. Your provider will use a thin needle to inject a small amount of Botox® into the muscles underneath the skin. For many patients, the injection feels similar to a pinch. The assistant will use ice to numb the injection site.

You will be able to return to your daily routine as soon as your treatment is finished. Avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas for 24 hours.

Some people may experience mild pain or swelling near the injection site. However, the risk of side effects is very low if your injections are performed by a certified medical provider. Always verify that your provider is treating you with authentic Botox® Cosmetic purchased directly from Allergan or an Allergan-authorized distributor.

Before starting treatment, let your provider know if you’ve had Botox® injections recently and any medications you’re taking. Avoid Botox® if you are currently pregnant or breast feeding.

When Will I See Results? How Long Does Botox® Last?

Most people will notice visible smoothing of lines in 1-2 weeks of receiving Botox® injections. Results typically last three months for moderate to severe frown lines. However, results are not permanent and ongoing follow-up treatments will be needed to maintain results.
