How Can You Get Rid of That Double Chin?

If you’re bothered by a double chin when you look in the mirror, you’re far from alone.

According to the most recent consumer survey from the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, 70% of consumers say they are bothered by excess fat under the chin or neck. It is a problem that affects men and women across demographic backgrounds.

Also known as submental fullness, a double chin may be caused by many factors. Culprits may include weight gain, genetics, individual anatomy and airway positioning.

At Cayce Medical Spa, we’ve helped many patients improve the appearance of the chin and neck area by getting rid of excess submental fat. Let’s go over some of the most common methods for treating a double chin.

Can Weight Loss Help?

For some people, weight loss may be helpful in achieving a more defined jaw line. The key to weight loss that lasts is consistent lifestyle habits, including regular exercise and a healthy diet.

If you haven’t exercised in a while, start slowly. A good starting place is to walk 10 to 15 minutes a day at first, and then gradually increase as your fitness level improves. Check the nutrition labels on the foods you buy to make sure you’re getting the right amount of proteins, carbohydrates and fats.

Don’t restrict your calories too much, because getting enough calories is essential for a healthy body and brain functioning. And if you’re new to exercise, work with a fitness trainer or exercise buddy to keep you motivated.

Noninvasive Procedures for Double Chin

Although weight loss may be helpful, many people still have a double chin even when they aren’t overweight. In such cases, it is possible to reduce or eliminate the appearance of a double chin without surgery. Talk to Cayce Medical Spa about whether a non-surgical option is right for you.

Kybella is an FDA-approved injection made with deoxycholic acid, which occurs naturally in the gall bladder and metabolizes fat. When injected under the chin, it breaks down fat cells, which are then absorbed by the body. Most patients require between 4 and 6 treatments to achieve the desired results. Patients should be prepared for some swelling within 10 days after the injection and may choose to schedule the procedure during cooler seasons when scarves, etc. are common to wear. Results are permanent; however, this is typically not the best option for those with excess or sagging skin.

Evoke Neck uses radio frequency technology to deliver heat to subdermal fat layers under the skin. When applied under the chin, it results in fat reduction and skin tightening for a slimmer jaw line and a more youthful appearance. Most patients require 6 to 8 treatments to see results and will need a semi-annual maintenance treatment to maintain results.

CoolSculpting uses cold temperatures to get rid of submental fullness. This device freezes fat cells through a process known as cryolipolysis, which can reduce fat under the chin by 20 to 25%. It can also improve skin laxity. Most patients see results in 2 to 3 treatments.

Surgical Double Chin Removal

Surgical options for eliminating a double chin include liposuction, face lift or neck lift.

Liposuction removes fat from beneath the skin for a more contoured appearance of the chin and neck. The surgeon makes a small incision and inserts a small tube which sucks out the fat from underneath the skin. In most cases, only a local anesthetic is required to numb the treated area, resulting in minimal downtime.

A face or neck lift involves the surgical removal of fat and sagging skin for a slimmer, more youthful appearance. The procedure may use a local anesthetic or general anesthesia depending on individual treatment requirements. Some people may experience a tight feeling in the neck area after a neck lift.
