Look and Feel Your Best with an Annual Skin Consultation

Most people already know skin care is an important part of a healthy lifestyle.

But how do you know if your current skin care routine is right for you? Which products should you buy? How often should you apply them? Would you benefit from any professional treatments?

That’s where an annual skin care consultation comes in. It’s a chance to meet with a licensed esthetician and get a better picture of your overall skin health. Your esthetician will listen to your concerns, answer your questions and examine your skin to identify any particular areas in need of attention.

You’ll come away with a clear set of goals and a personalized plan for looking and feeling your best. You’ll also be able to shop smarter by knowing which skin care products will work best for you.

Let’s go over some of the reasons why a skin consultation makes sense, as well as what you can expect at your appointment.

Why an Annual Skin Consultation?

If you’ve never had a skin consultation before, your initial visit is a great time to learn more about your needs and develop a treatment plan.

But a consultation isn’t just for new clients!

Everyone’s skin changes over time. That means a treatment that worked great in your teens may not work as well when you get older. Just as going to the dentist is essential for healthy teeth, seeing your esthetician once a year helps you address new skin concerns and update your treatment plan for best results.

Review Your Goals & Skin History

Your esthetician will ask about your skin care goals and any issues you’re concerned about. They will answer questions and recommend ways to improve the look and feel of your skin.

  • Skin care goals: Think about your goals before your appointment. You may be worried about the effects of prior sun damage. Perhaps you’ve been noticing wrinkles or discoloration when looking in the mirror. Or you may be looking for ways to brighten up a dull complexion.
  • Current skin care routine: Your esthetician may ask what products you’re currently using, including sunscreens, cleansers, moisturizers and cosmetics. You’ll want to tell them about any prior professional treatments you’ve had and the results of those treatments.
  • General health: Sometimes various medical conditions, allergies and medications have an impact on your skin. For example, people with diabetes may suffer a greater risk of infection, and some allergens are known to cause skin irritation. Some medications may make you more prone to sunburn or dry skin.
  • Lifestyle: If you spend a significant amount of time outdoors, you may be at greater risk of sun damage and premature wrinkles. A healthy diet that includes fruits and vegetables can promote skin elasticity and reduce the risk of inflammation. Smoking affects the texture of your skin and often leads to a yellowish, dull appearance.

Assess Your Skin’s Needs

There are several things your esthetician will assess in order to recommend a treatment plan. One of the most important is determining your skin type, such as whether you have normal, oily, dry or combination skin, as well as skin sensitivity.

Here are a few other characteristics that will help determine your skin care needs

  • Estimating your individual risk of sun damage helps in choosing the best sunscreen.
  • Texture includes softness, elasticity and firmness. Coarse skin will feel less firm and more uneven. It will be more prone to dryness, rashes and redness.
  • Signs of inflammation, such as noticeable redness, may indicate skin sensitivity or the presence of conditions such as rosacea
  • Rashes may be caused by environmental stressors, various medical conditions or even by using the wrong products on your skin.
  • Clogged pores are the result of excessive sebum, dirt and dead skin cells. They leave you more prone to breakouts.

Get an Individualized Treatment Plan

Your skin care plan may include products you can take home and in-office services. Your esthetician will recommend treatments based on the results of your analysis and your desired outcomes.

During your consultation, you will learn about the potential benefits and risks of different skin care options. Treatments will be tailored to your skin type and may address specific areas of concern such as wrinkles, sunspots, acne or minimizing scars. At-home care includes daily habits for promoting healthy skin, along with products such as sunscreens and moisturizers. In-office treatments may include injectables, chemical peels or laser treatments.

A skin care consultation also takes the guesswork out of buying skin care products. Once you understand your skin type and what your needs are, you’ll be able to select the best treatments with more confidence.

What to Expect During Your Consultation

A professional skin consultation at Cayce Medical Spa takes about 45 minutes. Your licensed esthetician will ask about your goals and any special concerns you have.

We also use the VISIA® Skin Analysis System to closely assess overall skin health and any underlying damage. It offers more information than you can get from an unaided visual inspection alone. The system records and measures the surface and subsurface of your skin to reveal the extent of any UV damage, wrinkles, pore size, sebum production and discoloration. It helps to better assess your pores and identify other issues such as inflammation.

The results of your analysis will enable your esthetician to recommend a care plan that treats areas of concern and helps to achieve your goals.

No matter your age, shape or size, we believe that everyone deserves to feel confident in their own skin. We will help you do just that when you schedule a complimentary skin consultation with one of our licensed estheticians.
